"Something Borrowed" is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Emily Giffin. Darcy and Rachel have been best friends since they were young and have been inseparable since. Rachel, a lawyer, is a smart, plain, ordinary girl who lets Darcy boss her around. Darcy is your typical fashionista who seems to only care about, well, herself.
Darcy is engaged to be married to a lawyer named Dex, who also happened to have went to law school with Rachel. In recurring flashbacks during the movie, you could see that Dex and Rachel obviously had feelings for each other, but just never expressed those feelings to each other. It also came out, however, during a celebratory dinner between the two, but then Darcy comes in (how did we not see that coming?). She questions the relationship between the two and when Rachel only replied they were "just friends", she tells Dex to ask her (Darcy) out. Which he does, and six years later, they're engaged to be married. Oblivious to both Dex and Darcy, Rachel is deeply in love with Dex, but chooses to not ruin her best friend's happiness (bummer).
After a drunken night, Dex and Rachel find themselves in bed together. They decide to keep the secret from Darcy and declare the night a "mistake", but,as the movie progresses, they finally announce their love for one another, thus Dex calling off the wedding, and Rachel having to face a heartbroken Darcy, who angrily told Rachel that she hated her for sleeping with her fiance (We won't mention the fact that Darcy cheated on Dex with one of his friends and became pregnant, but anyway...).
If I could grade this movie, I would give it a B+. The beginning of the movie was so slow that I wanted to cut it off, but a hour into the movie, it quickly picked up and caught more of my interest. The acting was good and, having read the sequel "Something Blue", I think the actors that the casting director chose fit the characters really well (not to mention some of the male actors were easy on the eyes). John Krasinski, who played Ethan, a childhood friend of Darcy and Rachel, bought a lot of comic relief to the film and Kate Hudson fit the role of Darcy perfectly. So, when -or if- they make a sequel out of "Something Blue", we'll get to see a story based around Darcy and Ethan. (It would be wrong if they didn't make a sequel; in between the credits, they featured one last scene where Darcy is running after Ethan in London. There HAS to be a sequel, thanks to that cliffhanger).
I have not read the book that this movie is based off on, but after watching the film, I think I will have too. Like I mentioned before, I read the sequel and loved it so I know the I will probably say the same about "Something Borrowed".
